Preparation, not performance

C&P Exam Preparation

A VA claim exam (C&P exam) is used to gather information for a disability claim. Prepare your records and history, then answer accurately in your own words.

Exam Day Reminders

Confirm the date, time, location, and whether the exam is in person or telehealth
Bring identification and follow the scheduling contractor or VA facility instructions
Review your own treatment history, medications, symptoms, and major dates
Bring or use your normal assistive devices if the appointment instructions allow them
Answer accurately in your own words; do not rehearse or exaggerate
Ask the examiner to repeat or clarify a question you do not understand
If VA needs additional testing, follow the instructions you are given
After the exam, check your claim status and keep a note of any issue you may need to report

What's a DBQ?

Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) organize medical information that may be relevant to a claim exam. Reviewing the public DBQ can help you understand the types of medical history and functional information an examiner may ask about.

Source check: VA publishes public DBQs and explains what happens at a claim exam. Use them to understand the process, not to script answers.

After Your Exam

  • 1Write down everything you remember from the exam while it's fresh
  • 2To request the final claim-exam report, follow VA's current records-request instructions (VA Form 20-10206)
  • 3If you had a bad experience, report the concern promptly using VA's listed complaint options or through the scheduling contractor
  • 4Keep your own notes and review the decision letter when VA issues it; use the official review process if you disagree with the decision
